Whenever you select a mutual fund as an option to invest in over other choices, then you should try to find out what are your mutual fund holdings. This is the list of stocks, bonds, and cash that is held in the fund.
Different mutual funds specialize in different types of investments. Some funds are focused in large cap stocks or in bonds. Obviously these two different types of funds would have much different kinds of holdings. You are going to want to figure out exactly what the mutual funds you are interested in are holding.
Mutual funds hold a vast variety of different kinds of investments within them. Even a fund that is supposed to be a large cap fund may hold some bonds and some cash within the fund. It is usually pretty easy to find out what is in your mutual fund. If the fund does not send you information about what is in it, then you can go online to any number of financial websites to find this information.
You just type in the symbol of the mutual fund you are interested in and go to the “holdings” section, and you will see what mixture of stocks, bonds, and cash it has. The website may not be able to tell you exactly which stocks are being held within the fund, however many times the website will tell you what the top five holdings are. It will also tell you the percentage of the fund is invested in each of those top five stocks.
You will be able to use all this information to figure out exactly which kind of mutual fund is right for you. Always do the proper amount of research before you put your money into any kind of investment, even a mutual fund.
